about

The Meiji Shrine,Max Ridgway - guitar, recorded on January 14, 2016. In December of 2015 I visited the Meiji Shrine in Japan. The visual images and the environmental sounds heard on this video were recorded there. The Meiji Shrine (明治神宮 Meiji Jingū) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. The original site, surrounded by a 170 acre forest, was destroyed in the Tokyo air raids of World War II and the current structures were rebuilt in 1958. Despite (or maybe because of) the turbulent history of the Meiji Shrine, it retains a numinous atmosphere of ancient solemnity. In this recording, I have attempted to capture the mood of this remarkable place as I experienced it.
